Virtually every member of their immediate families showed up at Nashville's BMI headquarters Tuesday (Sept. 21) to assist Luke Bryan and Dallas Davidson in celebrating their No. 1 single, "Rain Is a Good Thing." Both men wrote the song, and Bryan's recording topped the Billboard country chart in July.
"I think half of the state of Georgia is here," observed BMI's Jody Williams. "It wouldn't be a party without the family here." Then, as the merrymakers settled down to listen, Williams read out the name of every Bryan and Davidson relative in the room.
Originally, the party was set to take place on BMI's rooftop terrace overlooking downtown Nashville. But bowing to the merciless 95-degree heat, the organizers relocated the festivities to the building's cavernous reception hall. In addition to serving cocktails, BMI also laid out for the guests an authentic country supper that included fried chicken, macaroni and cheese and peach cobbler.
Speaking of Bryan as an artist, Williams said, "He's proved he can convincingly sing any kind of song and deliver any kind of message."
Williams noted Davidson has had more than 80 of his songs recorded during his six years in Nashville, five of which hit No. 1.
Roger Murrah, Bryan's publisher, said singer-songwriter Rachel Proctor first brought Bryan to his attention. After meeting the new arrival from Georgia and noting his good looks and charisma, Murrah proclaimed, "If that boy can sing a little bit and write a little bit, we're gonna sign him."
Appealing to the crowd, Murrah continued, "I'd like to see him in television and movies, wouldn't you all?" The responding roar said they would.
Mike Dungan, head of Bryan's label, Capitol Nashville, said, "Luke is proof that nice guys can and do finish first." He then surprised Bryan by presenting him a gold record for "Rain Is a Good Thing" to certify 500,000 paid downloads of the single. Dungan also announced that Bryan's current album, Doin' My Thing, has been certified gold for shipments of 500,000 copies.
Bill Mayne, executive director of Country Radio Broadcasters, told Bryan and Davidson that "Rain" has been played 164,847 times on 3,000 radio stations to a total potential audience of 950 million listeners.
"To experience this with one of my best friends in the world ... is such an amazing ride," said Bryan, who has been friends with Davidson since they were boys.
He explained the song is an honest reflection of what it was like to grow up in a farming community where rain was essential to a good crop.
"It was our life -- watching the sky," he said.
